Newton Boston, referred to as the garden city, is the 10th largest city in the Massachusetts area, with a population of close to 84,000 people.  It was founded in 1638 as a part of Cambridge, and first incorporated as its own town in 1688, during which time it was referred to as Cambridge Village.  Finally in 1691 this garden of a city received its current name.

One thing that makes Newton Boston unique is the fact that it isn’t just a singular city with a town center; it is instead a hodgepodge of over 13 small villages, each with its own community, personality and downtown area.  The 13 small villages that make up Newton Boston include: Auburndale, Newton Centre, Chestnut Hill, Newton Corner, Newton Highlands, Newton Lower Falls, Newtonville, Nonantum,Waban, Thompsonville, Oak Hill, Newton Upper Falls, and West Newton.  Which is pretty exotic for many visitors, often causing a great deal of confusion.  The villages are sometimes listed as separate cities, which leads to even more misunderstanding.

Newton Boston became known as the garden city because of the high concentration of gardens and farms in the area prior the 1950’s.  During the 1950’s the city became densely populated, thanks to the availability of cars and other systems making it far easier for people to move about.

Newton Boston became known as one of the first suburbs for commuters, long before the population rush of 1950’s.  The trend just happened to explode as the option became available to more people.  Ironically, Newton Boston is no longer considered a commuter suburb, as a great number of the Newton suburbanites have managed to find employment within the city, or other surrounding small towns. Very few citizens of the general population elect to commute to Boston for employment.  This probably helps to add to over all community oriented lifestyle that the people of Newton Boston share.

When it comes to the lifestyle of Newtonites, things are pretty good.  The school system is considered one of the best in the area.  The average income is over 100,000 a year, with only around 8% of the general population living at the poverty line; only about 2.1% of families were considered to be below the poverty line. Newton was also voted the safest city in the US, several years in a row.  The average family size for Newton Boston is 3 people, and the average household size is 2.5.  Newton Boston is the perfect idyllic setting for the upper middle class.

The city boasts an educationally rich environment, surrounded by colleges like Andover Newton Theological School, Boston College, Hebrew College, Mount Ida College, Lasell College, and Boston College Law School.  From the grammar school perspective, there are several public elementary schools, two public middle schools, and two public high schools.  There are also a host of private schools to meet all grammar school grade levels. More detailed information about Newton shows that there are more women than men in Newton, by about 20%.  Men make around 20,000 more a year on average than women. The population is over 80% Caucasian.
